iN DEMAND SET TO PRODUCE NASA LAST LAUNCH,
AN ORIGINAL 3D SPECIAL ABOUT THE ATLANTIS SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH
Seminal Event in U.S Space Exploration History to Be Captured in State-Of-The Art 3D For Free On Demand Cable Customers
Chicago, June 14 - iN DEMAND will turn its 3D wizardry to the skies with the production of a new special surrounding the final flight of the U.S. space shuttle program, entitled NASA Last Launch, announced Emilio Nunez, SVP Movies & Original Programming for iN DEMAND. The one-hour special is part of the company's focus on developing compelling original stereoscopic 3D content for cable. The special delves into the elaborate training, testing and preparation for the planned launch of the Atlantis space shuttle scheduled for July 8, 2011 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. State-of-the-art 3D cameras will then capture both the dramatic launch - from an astounding 500 feet away - and the landing.
The special was commissioned by iN DEMAND to premiere on Comcast Xfinity's 3D linear and Free On Demand platforms, and will be available for carriage by iN DEMAND's other affiliates. It will premiere approximately two weeks after the shuttle launch.
NASA Last Launch is produced by Vertical Ascent Productions, Adam Friedman, Executive Producer. "We are honored to have been given incredible and singular access to the final launch of the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis," said Mr. Friedman. "Not only will this show give viewers an amazing and informative inside look at how the shuttle program works, 3D is also the perfect format to capture this historical event."
According to iN DEMAND's Nunez, "When a cable customer buys a new 3D television set, we want them to be blown away by the technology. In producing a series with stunning visuals covering a variety of noteworthy subjects and timely events, we hope to showcase 3D as effectively and as broadly as possible. For this reason, NASA Last Launch will be made available for free on Video on Demand and linear TV simultaneously."
For NASA Last Launch, Vertical Ascent has been given unprecedented access to the shuttle with cameras situated only 500 feet away from the launch pad. The production team also filmed Mission Control and astronaut training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Commander Chris Ferguson, pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists Rex Walheim and Sandy Magnus have all been interviewed and viewers will see them suiting up and getting into the shuttle as well. Throughout the show, former shuttle mission commander Jay Honeycutt and other NASA experts lend insight to the amazing footage. A Panasonic 3D A-1 camera used to shoot the special is also going on board the shuttle, and footage from space will be incorporated into the show.
Vertical Ascent has been producing a series of 3D FOD (Free On Demand) content for iN DEMAND called "In Deep" using the immersive visual experience of 3D as a platform for adventure and exploration. The series of half-hour shows have brought viewers to diverse worlds in 3D, such as Mardi Gras, BMX, Parkour and snow sports in Telluride. In addition, unique hour-long specials include NASA Last Launch and last month's Kentucky Derby Diaries, which profiled several horses and their teams vying for spots in the 2011 Kentucky Derby.
Other 3D content currently distributed by iN DEMAND for cable includes major studio new releases and indie films on the Movies On Demand platform. Concerts, documentaries and event programs are in development. This content can be found in both the transactional and free on demand areas of cable systems.
