Press Release #34 (8/27/09)
VIDEO ON DEMAND SERVES UP HIT MOVIES IN SEPTEMBER
DAY AND DATE WITH HOME VIDEO RELEASE
New York, August 27 - Many major film studios are now offering movies to cable's Video on Demand (VOD) the same day as their home video DVD release and even earlier in some instances, according to iN DEMAND Networks, the leading distributor of VOD movies to cable. Several hit movies are coming in September to digital cable's VOD platform starting on the same day as DVD: "State of Play" - 9/1; "Next Day Air" - 9/15; "Observe and Report" - 9/22; "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" - 9/22; "The Brothers Bloom" - 9/29 and "Away We Go" - 9/29.
In addition to Day & Date, many other great films are premiering on VOD in September, including: "Coraline" - 9/3 (including 3D in many markets); "Fast & Furious" - 9/10; and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and many others.
Many major movie titles have recently come to cable's VOD Day & Date with home video. Just a few of those include: "Watchmen," "Gran Torino," "Friday the 13th," "Inkheart," "Yes Man," "Knowing," "He's Just Not That Into You," "Bride Wars," "Obsessed," "17 Again" and "A Plumm Summer."
Day & Date availability is growing quickly. According to David Asch, iN DEMAND Networks Executive Vice President, "Starting in mid-2007, there were only 15 titles offered to cable's Video On Demand platform the same time as DVD. In 2008, there were 73 day and date titles. If current trends hold, we expect to present significantly more than 100 day and date titles to cable viewers during the year 2009."
VOD is becoming second nature in many households. More viewers are finding the convenience and simplicity of Video On Demand a great way to watch movies. The growth trajectory is steep. According to Rentrak, in the first six months of 2009 alone there were more than 3.35 billion US On Demand transactions* on cable and other platforms in the U.S., including free, subscription and transactional offerings. That compares to 3.8 billion VOD transactions in all of 2008 (Rentrak). According to Leichtman Research Group, Inc. over 40 million digital cable subscribers had access to VOD as of the beginning of 2009 (including both cable systems and telephone companies).
With a click of their remotes on digital cable, viewers can order, pause, rewind and forward. Most major Hollywood movies on VOD are also in HD. Viewers can find complete listings by going to www.iNDEMAND.com/movies, their on-screen guides or their cable system websites.
